Stainburn and Almscliffe Crag – 30th June 2011

8 of us set off out via Brackenthwaite Lane in the direction of Norwood Hill again, except that this time we went in the opposite direction and rode all the way down it (having missed the turn off for Dob Park). The descent was a lot of fun apart from the potholes threatening to throw you off. At the bottom (Farnley) we turned left towards Stainburn and Ronnie gave us a demonstration of how to sprint up a hill. None of us managed to copy him.

We rode on to Little Almscliffe Crag but instead of turning to Harrogate we went down to the A658, crossed over and turned left up towards Weeton and Dunkeswick. About here we encountered a suicidal bunny who kept trying to run under our front wheels. A lot of braking saved the bunny and almost brought down all the riders behind Karl. Oops. Sorry. Right off the A61 towards Kirkby Overblow but we did the steep hill at Kearby first. Gold/Silver/Bronze to Darrell,Karl, & Martin P. Then back towards Burn Bridge via the usual back lane.

4 of us enjoyed a recovery pint in The Black Swan before heading home. Approx 30 miles at 16 mph or so average.

Beningborough – 26th June 2011

A new record turnout of 20 showed up at St Aidens in glorious sunshine including new riders Tim W, Craig, and Dan. Welcome all.

Duncan, Ronnie and Karl had already done a 28 mile loop to Summerbridge and arrived back just in time for Malcolm to shout “Bagby” and off we went. Turns out he meant Beningborough . We headed out via Knaresborough and Boroughbridge before turning south to Gt Ouseburn and then crossing over the Aldwark toll bridge where the attendant looked genuinely pleased to see us. He likes cyclists despite the fact we cross for free. The warm weather and flat roads kept the pace and morale high and we arrived at the farm shop just before their 10 am opening time. Despite this and the sheer number of us the ladies coped admirably and we all enjoyed great cake and coffee.

The route back took us via Cattal, Boston Spa, Clifford, Thorner, Sicklinghall and K’by Overblow. A few of us suffered a bit in the heat towards the end (cue sunburnt arms/legs) but it was a great ride in great weather. Main ride was 61 miles at approx 17 mph av.

British Cycling Affiliation and Club Membership

Hi Everyone,

Hope you are well.
I just wanted to write to you to let know about some plans for the next steps in the Cappuccino Club’s evolution.
So far this year, we have attracted a lot of new members and have taken part in some great events, as well as having some great club rides.  As our rides are now averaging approximately 15 riders at any one time, myself and a few other members believe that we should become affiliated to one of the country’s cycling bodies and as a result have decided to affiliate ourselves to British Cycling.  This however incurs a cost of £88.
The benefits of joining British Cycling are:
Third Party Liability Insurance to a value of £10,000,000
Free copies of BC’s publication and the BC Handbook
Free Bronze level membership for all club members for the first year
For more information on what you get with Bronze level membership, please visit the BC website at: http://www.britishcycling.org.uk/membership/benefits
Up to now, I have personally absorbed some of the club running costs, mainly associated with maintaining the website, which have been relatively small.  However, I’m not prepared to fund the BC membership.  This means that we are going to have to formalise a few things, particularly around club finances.
I have therefore got agreement from a majority of current riders to look to introduce an club membership fee of £5 to cover these costs.
I am in the process of setting up a club bank account and once this is done I will be writing to you all again to complete a membership application form, along with a payment of £5 to cover these small club running costs for the remainder of the year.  We will then look to renew our membership to the club at the start of each calendar year from there on.
It is mine and other members intention to keep the club as open as possible, so at the moment, I don’t think there is a need to have a committee, but I have asked and got agreement from some members to act as signatories on the club bank account once set-up to ensure that more than one person has to sign any cheques etc.  I also propose to keep some basic club accounts so that members have got confidence that their money is not being used in an unauthorised way.
I know few club members have kindly helped with organising a few things already this year, and I am keen for member involvement to continue to take some of the burden off of my shoulders 😉
Anyway…I hope that keeps you all up to date with things and if you have any questions, comments or concerns, please let me know…details below!!
Thanks again for all your support up to now, this club is really starting to turn into something amazing and I think we will all agree that it is onwards and upwards…
Don’t forget our 2nd Birthday Ride and Family Picnic on Sunday 10th July.  See the website or Facebook page for more details.
Cheers
James

Boroughbridge – 21st June 2011

Twelve riders met under grey skies for tonight’s run to Boroughbridge. The ride began on a happy note with Duncan announcing that he’s going to be a dad!
Good group riding through Burn Bridge and up Drury Lane to the bypass and on down the road to Kirkby Overblow. Swept on over the ridge through Sicklinghall and Linton where Darrell hit a pothole hard but gladly survived with only his water bottle abandoning ship. From Wetherby we lined up for a ‘through-and-off’ session to the roundabout at Boroughbridge. The entire group managed to stay together for the full distance as we circled the roundabout keeping in formation, albeit at a slightly easier pace for the run back to the Marton turnoff.
Spun back into Knaresborough by way of Ferensby and Farnham for the inevitable sprint up the hill back into Harrogate. Podium places for Matthew, Darrell and Malcolm. Another splendid Cappuccino outing made better by the fact that we all stayed dry.
33 miles in all.  View the route: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/93990671

Great Yorkshire Bike Ride Video

Thanks go to Nick Paterson for putting this video clip together.  It really captures what was a great day for the Cappuccino Cycling Club and all riders were proud to take part in such a great event, raising money for some good local causes.

Bolton Abbey – 19th June 2011

Four of us gathered in the mist at St Aidans, including two who had done the GYBR yesterday (plaudits to Alex Pritchard and Malcolm Yates) and headed towards the closed off A59 at Blubberhouses via Beckwithshaw, Fewston and Timble.  The mist had changed to full on rain and as three of us had foolishly followed the forecast we only had our Cappuccino gilets to keep us warm – which left us wet if smart.  As both the A59 and West End road were closed, we went up Duck Lane to the Stonehouses and fiddled our way through to A59 via Thruscross, down to Bolton Abbey and a deserved coffee as we were utterly drenched.

Having failed to warm up, we headed off up over Skyholme Lane to Stumps Cross, Duck Lane, Menwith Lane, Hampsthwaite and home, fortunately under brighter skies. Nb Garmin is the Darley variant – a cheeky 85km in poor weather. Nick Paterson was supposed to have joined us but texted Alex to say that he had got up early that morning and had done his exercise :). Malcolm admitted to be more miserable than normal – lol. Pete

Great Yorkshire Bike Ride – 18th June 2011

After much anticipation, the day of the Great Yorkshire Bike Ride had arrived and the day would turn out to be a memorable one for sure.

We had 16 members signed up to ride and everyone of us look resplendent in their club colours.  Most of us opted to ride to the start at Wetherby, so we met bright and early outside St Aidans School at 7.30am on a damp morning.  The forecast for the day was not good, with rain and cloud expected.  Despite this we rolled out of the school and made our way to Wetherby Racecourse in good spirits and at a leisurely pace.  Before we knew it we were signing in and collecting our lunch vouchers and race (sorry I meant ride) numbers.  After a few team photos it was off to the start line.

We gathered behind the line and were given a stern talking to by the official starter about riding code of conduct.  We rope went up and we were off!!  What lay ahead was a further 70 miles of fine North Yorkshire countryside between us and Filey, and the waiting Cappuccino Cycling Club Team Bus…whoops, I mean Coach!!  As most of the ride was flat the initial pace up the old A1 was brisk, with us passing many riders, before we were stopped in our tracks by a Rob Jackson puncture.  After a swift repair, we were back on our way before turning right past Marton-cum-Grafton, through Great Ouseburn and onto Aldwark Bridge, where we had to make way for a Maserati.

From Aldwark it was onto Easingwold, before continuing back out in to the country lanes through Crayke, Stillington, Farlington and Sheriff Hutton.  Soon after Sherrif Hutton was the first proper test of the day, Terrington Bank.  A fairly short climb, but one with a fairly steep gradient.  After re-grouping at the top of the climb it was then a quick descent into Terrington village for our lunch stop at 10.45 in the morning!  The lunch stop was extremely well organised with plenty of food, that was until Duncan arrived and tried to eat the entire contents of the sandwich tent!

The ride after the lunch stop the continued into the more rolling roads of the Howardian Hills, past Castle Howard and Coneysthorpe, before arriving into Malton.  The large number of cyclists going through Malton seems to slow the traffic down somewhat, but after negotiating the streets we were soon back in open countryside before hitting the second real test of the day, Horse Course Bank at Settrington.  This was a much longer climb, but the result was that it brought us out on to the top of the Yorkshire Wolds, where we were greeted by great views out towards our target of Filey.  From here it was downhill all the way.  After getting out legs back, the pace really picked up as we passed through West and East Lutton and Weaverthorpe at an average speed of around 25mph.

As we approached some cross-roads with 10 miles to go we looked back up to check to see if all our riders were still with us and we were shocked to see about 30 other people in tow and the back of our group…amazing!!  The route then continued through Wold Newton, before CRASH!!.  One of the riders in our extended group had hit the deck.  After finding out that he had support, we then continued for the final run in to Filey.  After a small hill, we then descend into Filey and formed up in our group and followed the marshalls and signs that would take us to the finish line at Filey Country Park.  As we approach the line we caught our first glimpse of the CCC Team Coach…absolutely awesome!

Anyway, we all crossed the line, congratulated everyone on a great ride and grabbed a cuppa to celebrate.  We were soon joined by Martin and Chris who were a few moments behind the main group.  Think it was there retro steel style that slowed them down a bit.  We all then made for the Team Coach for the return trip to Harrogate.  The coach had been kindly laid on by Karl and his company Moseley Coach Sales and everyone was amazed that we were actually going to return home in a coach that had the club’s logo on the side.  It was really drawing attention from other riders.  We loaded the bikes on, got changed and made for a boozer on the A64.  After a couple of pints came the revelation of the day….Malcolm silenced everyone and announced that he had really enjoyed himself.  After picking ourselves off the floor we had another celebratory pint before making our way back home.

The day was a truly awesome day in club history, with everyone riding really well and looking great in the club colours.  It was capped off by Karl’s amazing gesture of organising our own coach.  Thanks Karl, none of us can thank you enough for sorting that out.

If anyone from the ride organisers are reading this, thank you from everyone at the Cappuccino Club for a great day out and we hope the money we raised is put to good use.

Chapeau to all that took part!!

Brimham Rocks – 16th June 2011

I think there were about 12 of us tonight but I forgot to count. Sorry.

Anyway Martin’s mate Nick (who beat us all on track day) joined us along with Chris (“Retro Rocket”) Morrison freshly back from 450 miles of riding in Scotland.

We set off to do Hartwith Bank and Brimham Rocks and headed out via Harlow Moor Rd, Birstwith and then the fast descent into Darley where we narrowly avoided a collision with a lunatic in a 4×4. It turned out that Nick, Chris, and Rob had never done Hartwith Bank before and therefore had no idea of the pain that awaited them. Annoyingly both Nick and Chris lead the way from start to finish despite not knowing how long and steep the hill is. Oh well – ignorance is bliss.

After Hartwith we rode over Brimham Rocks and turned left to enjoy the fast paced swooping road down to Bishop Thornton. After that it was back via Ripley, Knox Mill Lane and a recovery pint in The Swan on the Stray. Which was nice.
My total ride was 41 miles at 15.3 av.

Wetherby – 14th June 2011

15 of us met at St. Aidans.  We rolled out of Harrogate via the usual Burnbridge/Kirkby Overblow route.  Having narrowly avoided a head on collision with 4 horses, we turned towards Wetherby with a brisk pace and in formation. The poor condition of the roads didn’t result in any accidents but Martin P had his (Rapha) water bottle jump ship and Nick’s rear light did the same.

Onto the old A1 and we all got into single file for some high speed thru’n’off which went very well. We did lose a couple of riders but in future the group policy will be to turn round at either end (B’bridge or Wetherby r’bouts) and head back to pick up anyone left behind. So if you lose the wheel in front please carry on – the group will come back and get you. A gentle ride back through Arkendale and the customary sprint up Knaresborough Hill (honours to Chris M, Malcolm and Mathew B) & a final pint of Guinness rounded off a fantastic ride.

My stats were 38 m at 18 mph av.
