Boroughbridge and Ripon – 17th May 2011

Ten riders gathered tonight in fresh conditions for a flattish ride to Boroughbridge and Ripon, with several riders fresh from competing in the tough Etape du Dales there was unsurprisingly no objections.

So off we set to Knaresborough and straight up Briggate Hill (Oh the pain).  Boroughbridge was soon reached with a strong tailwind pushing the average speed up.  From Boroughbridge it was on to Skelton with the wind now on the nose.  Group riding skills were the order of the night now with Ripon coming up quickly. On to Littlethorpe and Bishop Monkton, Ripley and back into Harrogate.

A 30mile ride at an 18mph average given the conditions and those tired legs from the weekend it was a very fast ride.  With the group working well and sharing the work in the strong wind.

Etape du Dales Team Car Report – 15th May 2011

Well, the Etape was finally upon us after numerous weeks of training and the Cappuccino Cycling Club riders looked resplendent in their club jerseys, whilst gathering nervously at the start line in Grassington.  We had left Harrogate in sunshine, but by the time we got to the start the clouds were gathering with a hint of rain the air.  The boys had loaded their supplies into the back of the car (not that there was much room left after Pete;s mega bucket of stuff) and were ready for the off.  Malcolm and James were delighted with the food supplies as this meant they were going to get high on bananas, Jelly Babies and energy gels – thanks chaps for the free food!!!

DS James Lovell and Mr Motivator Malcolm Yates, were also psyched up for the long day ahead and were hoping that the team car was fully geared up to tackle the tough ascents that lay ahead.  We waved the boys off and made for our first vantage point on the road near Yockenthwaite.  The gang were soon upon us and whizzed by at a good steady rate, riding nicely as a bunch.  It was then onto the top of Fleet Moss to watch the them at the top of the first major climb of the day.  By now the rain was starting to fall, nothing too heavy, but enough to get you wet.  There were loud shouts of encouragement from the team car as the team went past.  We then met them for a quick fuel stop a few hundred yards along the road before the very quick descent into Hawes.

At Hawes, DS James and Asst DS Malcolm needed some breakfast, so we made into a nice warm, cosy tea room for a quick cappuccino and a bacon sandwich.  This was welcome relief from the worsening weather outside.  Needless to say, we felt a touch guilty and got back in the car to join the boys on the road and made for the top of Buttertubs.  They had made good progress and we nearly missed them at the top, but a good turn of speed from the car saw us through.  At the top we helped a non-member fix a puncture – not sure whay as he was from Scotland, but there you go..

After the winding descent into Swaledale, we then caught and passed the guys before making up the climb to Low Row and over the water splash.  We stopped just after the water splash and helped someone who had come off.  Once again the CCC boys were not far behind and were still looking pretty fresh.  What lay ahead was the long drag up Tan Hill into a blasting headwind.  The group riding sessions that Malcolm had drilled into us were put into good effect by the team and we met them at a very windswept Tan Hill Inn.  Duncan had suffered a bit on the climb and looked like death warmed up at the top, but he recovered in the warm.

After a slightly prolonged stop, the boys disappeared quickly down into Keld.  Whilst they were doing that the team car picked up Nigel from Darlington Tri Club.  He was the rider that had fallen off earlier and had actually broken his finger.  We then set off and were soon catching the boys up on the next long climb up to Lamps Moss, once again into a blasting headwind!!  After being verbally abused by someone who didn’t like us having a team car, it was straight down into Nateby and onto the next rendezvous at the Moorcock Inn.  On our way there we were flagged down by another rider who had troubles.  This time it was a broken spoke.  We agreed to give him a lift to the Moorcock, but if our riders were OK, we would keep him in the car until the end.  CCC caught us up again at the Moorcock Inn, but thankfully they were all still fighting fit and looking good.

We left the Moorcock and what lay ahead was not inviting…a very wet and foggy drag up the Coal Road.  Once again, the boys looked awesome up the climb and soon were at the top and knocking on at a nice steady pace.  It was then another swift descent into Dentdale before another drag up to Newby Head Moss, in what can only be described as a deluge!!  The team car was still performing well as were James’ cameras and we made for our next stop at Ribblehead, but alas…the boys didn’t want us and just rode by.  They were probably annoyed that we were sitting in the warm car sipping a nice cup of tea!!

We carried on and came across another stranded non-CCC’er.  We pulled over and discovered he had a broken chain.  There was no space in the car, so Malcolm done his rubber surgical gloves and carried out a precision operation to fix it for him.  It was then off to the next feed station at Stainforth.  The boys has beaten us there, so it was a quick stop to make sure they were all OK, which they were, before we started the final climb of the day up to Stainforth and on into Littondale.  Once again the car did really well on the 20% incline, knocking out a steady rythmn as did the boys who soon caught us up at the top of the climb.  We then let them pass us again at the bottom of the Halton Gill descent before making for the finish line back at HQ in Grassington.

It was a great sight to see all of our riders come over the line at various intervals.  The training had paid off and what’s more a lot of other riders were commenting on how good we looked.

It was a really amazing day and something that everyone taking part should be extremely proud of the efforts.

Chapeau though to Karl, Pete, Alex, Nick, Duncan, Darrell, Mark, Paul and Dave – you were all awesome!!

Bolton Abbey – 15th May 2011

Well there were six of us out today including new members Craig and Mark.  Welcome to you both.

After a brief disscusion we decided to head out to Bolton Abbey.  We set off from Harrogate through Beckwithshaw and up to Swinsty and Timble with the wind pushing against us all the way.  We climbed up onto Askwith Moor and then down to Askwith with Paul trying to beat his 49mph record.  We then climbed up to Beamsley Beacon and then down towards Bolton Abbey to the tea room.

After refreshments we headed back towards Ilkley and Otley through Beamsley and Askwith.  We then went up to Leathley, Pool, Castley and Weeton before heading into Kirkby Overblow where we all went our seperate ways home. Between 55 and 60 miles and an average of 15 mph with 3000 ft of climbing. The rain held off, just about anyway.

A good ride today thanks to all who took part. Lets hope the lads doing the Etape du Dales are having a good day aswell.

Almscliffe Crag – 12th May 2011

Uncertain conditions greeted Nick, Martin G, Paul & Matthew at St Aidans tonight. Wind, rain clouds and sunshine – the ride started with a rainbow in the distance! After 10 minutes of Nick fettling his seat position, it was decided a gentle, flat ride was in order so we set off in the direction of Burn Bridge via Leadhall Lane. It was then on to Brackenthwaite Lane and over the top to Leathley Lane and the long, fast descent to the cross road at the A658 at Poole. We rode straight over towards Castley and up to Weeton before turning back towards Huby and over the A658 towards Almscliffe Crag. We then made the steady climb (remember this was a *flat ride*) through North Rigton up High Moor Rd and back on to the Otley Rd (where we stopped whilst Nick had another quick tweak) for the descent in to Beckwithshaw then back up the Otley Rd to Harrogate where we split for home as we reached the Stray.

The weather stayed fine and the wind was kind to us. Not so flat or gentle in the end but a good ride for all. Approx 25 miles and a good average speed.

Good luck to all the CCC members tackling the Etape on Sunday and to Martin for his Charity ride to Scarborough (and back) on Saturday.

East Harrogate Loop – 10th May 2011

Spirits were high this evening with some good weather forecast for our night ride ahead.  Numbers hit double figures again for a night ride and we welcomed a new rider, Andrew who joined the ranks.  Welcome Andrew…great to have you along.

We headed out of Harrogate along Leadhall Lane and down into Burnbridge, before climbing up in to Kirkby Overblow, with James (yes James) setting the pace.  Not sure what happened there, but I felt great – must have been the EPO I had for lunch!!  We then continued along towards Sicklinghall and we also had great views out across towards the Vale of York, where we could see York Minster lit up by the sunshine.  This is what cycling is all about, getting fit, whilst enjoying nature’s show.

We were soon in Wetherby, and we started a route up the old  A1 to practice our group riding.  We then turned off to Marton-cum-Grafton and followed a back lane to Boroughbridge.  From Boroughbridge we returned to Harrogate via Minskip, Staveley and Knaresborough, with our usual race up Knaresborough Hill, which this time was declared a draw between Karl and Darrell.

It is also worth mentioning that the tragic events at the Giro d’Italia were talked about a lot during the ride and all of us at the Cappuccino Club want to pay our respects to the Weylandt family.  Even on an evening club run, we all feel part of the cycling family and what happened yesterday is felt hard by cyclists everywhere.

RIP Wouter Weylandt…

Bolton Abbey – 8th May 2011

It was unpromising start to the day this morning, with dark overcast skies with a hint of rain and James in a bad mood (sorry all for that!!)  Anyway, we planned a route out to Bolton Abbey.  We kicked off by heading out up beyond Beckwithshaw, before dropping down to Swinsty and along to Fewston, before climbing up through Timble and on to Askwith Moor.  By now the weather was showing signs of perking up and we descended quickly down into Askwith before heading towards Ilkley.

Soon after hitting the flat, we turned right up Carter’s Lane skirting the edge of Middleton Woods and a few amazing displays of bluebells.  From here it was onwards and upwards to Langbar, before we plummeted down to Bolton Abbey Tea Rooms, where we refuelled.  We reappeared into some gorgeous sunshine and then made back towards Ilkley through Beamsley and Nesfield.  Once in Ilkley we then continued back to Askwith and onto Otley, Pool and Castley before returning to Harrogate through Weeton and Kirkby Overblow and up through Burnbridge.

The ride ended with everyone agreeing that the route was a good one at just over 50 miles with nearly 3,000ft of climbing.

Vale of York – 5th May 2011

There was wet stuff coming from the sky in Harrogate this evening as 5 of us set out for a fast paced but very wet ride out to flatter side of our “patch”.

We made our way out via Knaresborough, straight over the St James’s roundabout and through Little Ribston, turning left to Cowthorpe and then left again to Catall. The rain which had been fairly light had started to get a bit more intense by now and it was a matter of gritting your teeth. Unfortunatley this had the unintended consequence of a few of us also swallowing flies at high speed. Still, as Paul observed, “its protein”. On through Whixley and straight up the B6265 towards Boroughbridge, everyone was thoroughly soaked by now.

The return leg was via Minskip, Staveley and Scriven with the last run up Knaresborough Hill in the wet and dark being even more “fun” than usual.

32 miles at 17.6 mph avg. When I (Karl) got home I had water in my shoes and everything went straight in the washing machine. It was WET.

Wetherby – 3rd May 2011

After a blustery weekend, we were pleased to have a calm and very sunny evening to ride out into earlier.  Twelve riders met, including a new rider Tom.  Welcome Tom, it was good to have you along.  We opted for a familiar route, but in reverse.  We made our way out of Harrogate into Knaresborough and then onto Farnham, where Ben got a puncture.  This gave us all a chance to catch our breath and for Alex to provide us with the quote of the evening…”I’ve sold my car, and bought half a new bike”.  Nice one Alex and we look forward to seeing your new piece of carbon soon!!

We were soon back on our way and headed into Arkendale and onto the A168 for a bit more “through and off” practice marshalled by Corporal Yates.  Before we knew it we were down in Wetherby.  We then headed out of Wetherby towards Sicklinghall, where we noticed a sudden drop in temperature after the sun had gone down.  We then continued in Kirkby Overblow, before returning back to Harrogate, through Burnbridge and along Leadhall Lane.

Another very nice Cappuccino mid-week ride.

Dallowgill – 1st May 2011

A record 15 of us set out (but only 11 came back).

We headed out of Harrogate via Knox Mill Lane to Hampthswaite, Clint and left onto the Pateley Bridge road.  We turned right to climb up Stripe Lane only to hear the sound of Paul’s rear mech-hanger commiting suicide.  This gave everyone a rest as Nick and Malcolm attempted a repair, whilst the rest of us worked on our tan lines.  After a temporary repair Paul phoned home and turned back to meet his personal team car (wife and kids).  We then rode up to Brimham Rocks and promptly lost James L who was feeling unwell.  The rest of us then enjoyed a stunning climb up onto the windswept Dallow Gill Moor. On to Kirkby Malzeard and a late coffee stop at the Spa Gardens, Ripon where we fought for a table amongst a crowd of WheelEasy and Otley CC.

Due it being a bit late we opted for the direct route back via Bishop Monkton and then also lost Nick and James O for no apparent reason.  The remaining 11 battled the head wind back through Farnham and then used up any remaining energy trying and failing to catch Malcolm up Knaresborough hill.

50 miles at 14.7 mph (oh, we also had 2 punctures as well !)

Royal Wedding Avoidance Ride – 29th April 2011

Whilst those members of Cappuccino CC who should have been getting in some pre-Etape miles chose instead to stuff themselves with pork pies and crisps in front of the royal wedding, seven comrades left St Aidan’s for a breezy day in the Dales.

We headed off out through Beckwithshaw, being pushed along a bit by the wind up Norwood Lane before dropping down through Fewston and on over Timble and onto the moors. Aided by a tailwind on the descent into Askwith, Matthew’s speedo clocked us at almost 50mph, unfortunately, once at the bottom of the hill Tim had a puncture which allowed some of to us to bask in the sunshine, and Jamie to head home to get in barbeque lit.

The first long climb of the day came as we headed up from Ilkley, via Carter Lane onto to moor above Langbar. This is a long steady climb, but the strong winds meant that even the ‘easy’ bits were a challenge. We decided to stop for out first cuppa at the cafe at Bolton Bridge – good quality beans on toast which revived us nicely.

The weather was beginning to change a bit by now, with a chill wind and a hint of rain. We rode out of Bolton Abbey village via a gated back road that took us to Embsay, where we did another challenging climb onto another windswept but beautiful moor. It was too cold to admire the fantastic scenery for long, so we dropped down into Wharfedale, rode along the valley, and then climbed yet another big hill via Percival Hall up to Stump Cross Caverns where we enjoyed another well earned refreshment.

With the days climbing done, we enjoyed a swift, wind assisted run down Duck Street in tight formation, before heading directly back into Harrogate, despite the best efforts of an idiot in a Range Rover who somehow managed to upset Malcolm.

A really good, challenging ride and I hope we’ll be able to do this route again, especially on a day when the wind isn’t quite so strong.
