East Harrogate Loop – 10th May 2011

Spirits were high this evening with some good weather forecast for our night ride ahead.  Numbers hit double figures again for a night ride and we welcomed a new rider, Andrew who joined the ranks.  Welcome Andrew…great to have you along.

We headed out of Harrogate along Leadhall Lane and down into Burnbridge, before climbing up in to Kirkby Overblow, with James (yes James) setting the pace.  Not sure what happened there, but I felt great – must have been the EPO I had for lunch!!  We then continued along towards Sicklinghall and we also had great views out across towards the Vale of York, where we could see York Minster lit up by the sunshine.  This is what cycling is all about, getting fit, whilst enjoying nature’s show.

We were soon in Wetherby, and we started a route up the old  A1 to practice our group riding.  We then turned off to Marton-cum-Grafton and followed a back lane to Boroughbridge.  From Boroughbridge we returned to Harrogate via Minskip, Staveley and Knaresborough, with our usual race up Knaresborough Hill, which this time was declared a draw between Karl and Darrell.

It is also worth mentioning that the tragic events at the Giro d’Italia were talked about a lot during the ride and all of us at the Cappuccino Club want to pay our respects to the Weylandt family.  Even on an evening club run, we all feel part of the cycling family and what happened yesterday is felt hard by cyclists everywhere.

RIP Wouter Weylandt…
