Comments: Phil, the owner contacted us and invited us to come and visit his new coffee shop, so we duely obliged, planned a route and headed out there.  We got to the Old Barn just after they opened and our numbers took them by surprise a little.  Anyway, we were soon served with very good coffee and cakes before making our way back to Harrogate.  Worth a visit if you are in the Thirsk area.

Comments: How Stean Cafe is known to many of us, but the first time we visited it as the Cappuccino Cycling Club was on our Good Friday ride.  We had just completed a climb over Lofthouse Moor and were ready for some lunch.  The weather was good so we sat outside.  The service was excellent and very well organised as was the food.  The beans on toast was great and the portion sizes were even better, especially for a bunch of hungry cyclists.  Thanks for treating us so well!!

Marton-cum-Grafton – 26th April 2011

What a contrast a day can make…yesterday was warm and sunny and as we met outside St Aidans tonight, there was a distinct chill in the air.  The tights and 3/4 shorts were back on along with jackets for most apart from a few rule 5 hardy souls!!

A route out towards Marton-cum-Grafton was opted for after the weekend’s hilly exploits.  We made our way out of Harrogate through Knaresborough, Lingerfield, Staveley and Minskip.  The going was not that easy into a gusty headwind, but our riding discipline helped with everyone taking their turn on the front.

We crossed the A1 at Boroughbridge and head towards Aldborough, but turned right down a back lane towards Marton.  In the distance the sky was giving a good display for sunset and before we knew it we were in the centre of Marton.  We then made our way onto the old A1 where we decided to have a go at some group riding drills.  Everyone singled-out and took turns on the front to take the wind.  Not quite Team Sky, but we kept it together at about 24mph for a few miles before the group split.

After re-grouping at The Bridge Inn, we made our way back to Harrogate through Spofforth, Follifoot and Rudding Lane to complete a very good night ride.  33 miles in 2 hours.

Knaresborough Villages – 21st April 2011

With eyes on the Monster Good Friday ride it was a small group of Alex, Malcolm, Ronnie, Paul and Matthew for a nice quick spin of the legs.

A flat route was decided out through Knaresborough, Staveley, Arkendale and Goldsborough, so nothing too tough.  First piece of excitement was Malcolm having to brake as someone pulled across in front of time and he flew down into Knaresborough, but make managed to eloquently describe his thoughts using a single word that rhymed with a small rodent.
Malcolm headed home at Farnham, maybe feeling some of his Tan Hill ride from the day before in his legs, leaving the 4 of us to finish off the route of which 80% was done without lights…summer is on the way.
Nice ride, and certainly looking forward to when we can add in a beer in the sun at the end.

Lofthouse and Greenhow – 22nd April 2011

The first CCC Good Friday ride was greeted by misty and cool conditions in Harrogate this morning, despite the slightly later start time.  A few of the gang had already done 25 miles out around Lower Nidderdale and spirits were high for the day that lay ahead.  It was also good to see a record number of members for a club run.

The plan was to take a steady run out to Masham, before the fun and games began with climbs over Lofthouse and Greenhow.

We left Harrogate and headed down into Knaresborough, before then making for Farnham, Bishop Monkton and Ripon.  The initial pace was quite sedate compared to recent rides, but it was good to get the legs warmed up for what lay ahead.  From Ripon, we then made for Galphay, Kirkby Malzeard and on to Masham through Grewelthorpe.  As three of us were leaving the peleton at Masham, we had a quick coffee and cake stop at Suncatchers (which was in the shade).

After the quick re-fuel, it was then back onto our steeds to head out of Masham, towards Fearby and Leighton.  The road eventually started kicking up with a couple of digs that registered 20% on the GPS.  This split the group up a fair bit, but we continued up on the moorland.  The sunshine was set on full by now, and the countryside around us was simply stunning.  It was briefly interrupted by a brain-dead biker who decided to hurl abuse at us, but other than that it was a joy to be their under our own steam.  We re-grouped at the top of Lofthouse Summit, where Alex went ahead to film the descent.  We then descended very quickly down into Lofthouse, where we said good bye to Paul, (Darrel had a puncture on the descent – probably from the heat of his rims under braking) and had lunch at How Stean Cafe.  Great beans on toast, which even made Malcolm happy!

After lunch, we set off to be stopped almost immediately by Karl who had the second puncture of the day.  The ride down through Nidderdale to Pateley was fairly brisk, but as we got closer to Pateley, the peleton quietened with the thought of Greenhow.  We opted for the ascent from Bewerley on the quiet back lane.  This was brutal, with the first part of the climb being steep and relentless.  Halfway up, James had the third puncture of the day, but this was a tyre blowout, which needed a bit patching to avoid him getting the bus home!  After a bit of puncture repair DIY, we carried on to the summit of Greenhow and made our return to Harrogate along Duck Street, Menwith, Hampsthwaite and Knox Mill.

When back in Harrogate, with some heavy legs, we made for our favourite Cafe Rosso, to raise a glass of Peroni to what was a great day out on the bike.  You really can’t beat the part of the world we live in for some great cycling, especially when the sun is out!!

Wetherby – 19th April 2011

7 of us including new rider Nick (welcome) set off out to do a Wetherby run with a bit extra added on.

We set out via Pannal Golf Club (Drury Lane) and then into Kirkby Overblow and the Netherby hill, Sicklinghall, Wetherby and then changed the normal route and headed up the A168 towards Boroughbridge in order to do a bit of 2 by 2 thru n’ off practice. This also had the effect of bumping up the average speed somewhat. Everyone had a good turn at the front including Nick who professed to being new to close group riding.

We then turned off at Arkendale and then turned left onto the main road into Knaresborough which inevitabley led us onto the final customary charge up Knaresborough Hill (Malcolm took the honours) and then home. A thoroughly enjoyable brisk paced ride on a dry clear night. Approx 30 miles and my computer claimed an average mph somewhere in the 16’s – so quite quick.

Balk nr Bagby – 17th April 2011

Once again, we were greeted by some gorgeous early spring sunshine this morning and the plan was to head out to a new tea room called the Old Barn Cafe at Balk, which is a small hamlet near Bagby, Thirsk.  Due to the weather, spirits were high and a few more pairs of knees were on display with a hope of developing some good tan lines!!  A few of the riders had already bagged Norwood Edge on a dawn patrol, so we kept them warm and headed off in ernest.

Following a familiar route out initially to Boroughbridge, through Knaresborough, Farnham, Staveley and Minskip, we then headed on to new roads for the Cappuccino Club on a Sunday morning, and made for Thornton Bridge, Sessay, Dalton and before we knew it we arrived at our coffee stop in Balk.  Unfortunately we lost one of our riders along the way.  A couple of the lads went back a few miles, but there was no sign of Rob.

It was our first visit to the Old Barn Cafe, who had made contact with us saying that they were welcoming cyclists.  We were not disappointed and the coffee and food were very good.  Thanks Phil for the invite!!  We then made back for Harrogate following the same route.  Along the way we tried to re-create an iconic Tour de France shot of a peleton riding through a sunflower field.  Our effort involved Alex standing in the middle of a field of Rape Seed and snapping the others riding by.  The result was good and will be on our FlickR page soon.

The return to Harrogate was brisk and as a few of us had an extended pass out, we then made for a post ride drink at Cafe Rosso.  This involved a few Espressos and quite a few Peroni’s.  Today’s ride was a fantastic ride and really embodied the spirit of great road cycling – lets have some more please!!!

It was a shame that Martin P wasn’t there to join us after his crash and we were thinking of you (for a little while at least).

North Harrogate Loop – 14th April 2011

There was a call for something a bit different tonight, as most of the recent night rides had been out to the west of Harrogate, so Malcolm and James came up with a route around the northern villages of Harrogate.

We kicked off by heading down over Forest Moor and along the Knaresborough Riverside before heading into Scriven and on to Farnham.  The initial pace was brisk and as we headed towards Staveley, Rob and James had to floor it to get back on.  We then headed out towards Bishop Monkton, before hanging a left on the lane that took us over the Ripon road and into Markington.  The smell of steak coming from the pub in Markington was very tempting, but we resisted the urge and carried on up to the Drovers Arms crossroads and on into Shaw Mills and up to Burnt Yates.

At the top of Clint Bank we took the decision to have a dig at Church Bank in Birstwith, which was good.  Our return to Harrogate was then back through Hampsthwaite, up Hollins Lane and back through Know Mill.  It was here that Karl said that he thought that one Thursday each month, Cafe Rosso held an Italian night on a Thursday, so we thought it would be rude to see if it was tonight and have a sneaky Peroni, if it was open, alas….it was not the night!!  Oh well, back home for an early bath.

It was a really nice ride on and equally nice night.  Route details are here: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/79213372

Nidderdale – 12th April 2011

As I am sure many of you will know by now Matin suffered a nasty fall on this ride – he had a knock to his head and broke his collarbone. He is expected to be off the bike for about 4 weeks. I am sure everyone will want to join me in wishing Martin a speedy recovery.

The exact cause is uncertain but we think he hit a pothole or other defect in the road during the fast run down from Birstwith to Hampthswaite. It was quite a long and hilly route which 10 of us took us out via Norwood Lane to Fewston Reservoir, A59, Thornthwaite, Padside, Darley, Birstwith, Hampthswaite and back which was approx 28 miles at an average of approx 14.5 mph.

There was some good formation riding early on which broke up somewhat on the hills later in the ride. It was ironic that the whole group safely negotiated some steep descents and tight turns in the dark, only for Martin’s accident to occur on a fairly straight, flat, and familiar stretch of road. A warning to all of us.

Get well soon Martin!!

Riding in Groups

One of our members, Darrell has found this excellent document giving advice on how to ride in groups.  It’s well worth a read if you are new to group riding and want to understand what rules are in place….
