Nidderdale – 12th April 2011

As I am sure many of you will know by now Matin suffered a nasty fall on this ride – he had a knock to his head and broke his collarbone. He is expected to be off the bike for about 4 weeks. I am sure everyone will want to join me in wishing Martin a speedy recovery.

The exact cause is uncertain but we think he hit a pothole or other defect in the road during the fast run down from Birstwith to Hampthswaite. It was quite a long and hilly route which 10 of us took us out via Norwood Lane to Fewston Reservoir, A59, Thornthwaite, Padside, Darley, Birstwith, Hampthswaite and back which was approx 28 miles at an average of approx 14.5 mph.

There was some good formation riding early on which broke up somewhat on the hills later in the ride. It was ironic that the whole group safely negotiated some steep descents and tight turns in the dark, only for Martin’s accident to occur on a fairly straight, flat, and familiar stretch of road. A warning to all of us.

Get well soon Martin!!
