East Harrogate Villages Evening Ride – 15th September 2009

Rob and James headed out on a nice evening, albeit blustery through Knaresborough before going on to Scotton, Farnham, Staveley and Arkendale. From Arkendale it was out to the old A1 where there was a nice tail wind. Rob decided it was a good place to do a spot of speed work and interval training so we floored it for a few spells getting up to speeds of nearly 30mph on the flat.

At Walshford we turned back towards Spofforth, before returning to Harrogate through Follifoot and past Rudding Park.

Just over 28 miles in total with an average speed of 14.9mph – not bad going really.

Greenhow Hill, Pateley & Brimham Rocks – 13th September 2009

Three of us (Rob, John & James) met up at the New Inn at 8am to head out towards Pateley Bridge. Our route took us out past Beckwithshaw to Little Almscliff before heading past the Sun Inn, and over the A59 before start the long steady climb up to the top of Greenhow Hill.

It was a chilly start to the day, but the views from the top of Greenhow were as rewarding as ever before we plunged at speed down in to Pateley Bridge. We arrived in Pateley at 9.45 to find that most of the tea rooms were shut, however we found the Lemon Meringue Tea Room was open so in we piled. Rob had one of the largest custard tarts you have ever seen and after supping our tea, we head back out.

We left Pateley heading for Brimham Rocks via the Ripon Road. The climb had been under-estimated by James, but we eventually got to Brimham and then had a very quick descent all the way back down to Hampsthwaite before we returned back to Harrogate.

A very enjoyable ride of 41 miles with 3,300ft of climbing.

North Harrogate Villages – 30th August 2009

I was joined by a new rider this morning, John, who has recently moved to Harrogate. Welcome aboard John and good to have you along.

We kicked off from the New Inn Pub, on the Otley Road in Harrogate and headed out on a hilly start through Hampsthwaite, Shaw Mills and Bishop Monkton. With the main hills out the way it was over towards Boroughbridge via Markington, Burton Leonard (quick gel stop to get some energy back) and Staveley.

Before getting to Boroughbridge we turned right down a quiet lane to Marton-cum-Grafton and headed towards Knaresborough for a welcome coffee stop at Rascal’s down on the Riverside. It was then a steady return to Harrogate up through Starbeck to complete a very nice ride.

The pace was good and thankfully the rain held off, before we finished in glorious sunshine.

Evening Ride 12th August 2009

Only time for a quick blast this evening as James’ missus is now overdue waiting for the arrival of baby no.2!

Rob and James set off from Harrogate and headed out towards Penny Pot Lane and past the Army Apprentice College into a fierce headwind.  After some road rage from a phsyco BMW driver, it was left at the end of Penny Pot past the Sun Inn up to Norwood.  From Norwood we took a left up Broad Drub Road towards Little Almscliffe.  The return to Harrogate was via Beckwithshaw, upto the top of Brackenthwaite Lane and through Burnbridge.

Not the longest of rides, but enough to get the lungs going and enjoy the summer sunshine – and thankfully Mrs Lovell had not gone into labour whilst hubby was out!!

Nidderdale and Boroughbridge 25th July 2009

Rob and James were joined this morning by Lyn who was visiting us from Sheffield.  Welcome to CCC Lyn!

From Harrogate it was a rolling start from Harrogate through Hampsthwaite and Shaw Mills towards Markington.  Three steady climbs at the start of a ride certainly gets the legs and lungs warmed up!  By the time we reached the top of the third climb jackets and arm warmers were off and the sun was out.

A nice fast decent through Markington was the reward for the climbing, before eventually crossing the Ripon/Harrogate road to Burton Leonard.  We then headed to Staveley and Boroughbridge, before turning right towards Marton.

At Marton, Rob and Lyn peeled off towards Alwark and Wetherby, whilst James returned to Harrogate for family duties.

Boroughbridge Evening Ride Tuesday 14th July

Due to over-exertions at the weekend it was decided to keep our mid-week ride on the tame side.

We headed off towards Knaresborough on our usual route towards Farnham and onto Staveley.  Once in Staveley we took the lane that lead towards Minskip and Boroughbridge, avoiding the busy main road.

Once we arrived at the A1 it was over towards Aldborough, but before coming into Aldborough we took a right turn down a lane towards Marton-cum-Grafton.  The weather was good again this evening and the lane to Marton was very quiet, that ended in a short sharp climb into the main village by the Punch Bowl Inn (owned by Neil Morrisey).

From Marton it was back towards Knaresborough through Arkendale, Conerythorpe and Goldsborough, before heading along Abbey Road.  Instead of continuing along Abbey Road, we turned left and returned to Harrogate along Forest Moor Road.

All in all a very pleasant evening ride of just over 25miles.

Beningborough Hall Ride Sunday 12th July 2009

Only one rider today as the others had family duties to attend to!

Headed out towards Beningborough Hall on a breezy Sunday morning.  The ride out was nice and easy as the wind was behind me.  I was hoping to have a drink and food stop at the farm shop, but due to the speed of the ride I was out there well before the shop opened.  18 miles in just over an hour – can’t grumble with that.

It was then an about turn to head back towards Harrogate into the stiff breeze.  I altered my return route slightly to try and avoid the worst of the wind, and instead of going the direct route back I headed from Arkendale down towards Goldsborough and Knaresborough Riverside to get some shelter.  Had a quick coffee at Rascals Cafe before heading back up the hill towards home.

All in all a nice ride taking around 3 hours.

Evening Ride Thursday 9th July 2009

Only two riders tonight, Rob and James.

We headed off from Harrogate for a hilly start towards the villages of Hampsthwaite and Shaw Mills.  The ascent up from Shaw Mills towards Bishop Thornton was a challenging 12% for a short period.  From there it was onto Markington down towards Wormald Green.

Thankfully the weather was getting better as the ride went on with clearing skys and some nice summer sunshine breaking through.  After a quick stop in Burton Leonard , it was onto Staveley and across the main Boroughbridge/Knaresborough road to Arkendale.  The Tiger Inn in Coneythorpe was very tempting with gorgeous smells of steak wafting from the kitchens!!

The route back to Harrogate was through Goldsborough, along Abbey Road in Knaresborough and up the A59 back into Harrogate with legs that were starting to get heavy (for James at least).

All in all a really nice evening ride – 30.5 miles and 1,159 ft of climbing.
