Almscliffe Crag – 3rd August 2010

Four of us headed out from St Aidans on a slightly chilly evening last night with Almscliffe Crag the destination.  We took a familiar route out along Leadhall Lane, before dropping down into Burnbridge and out to the A61 Leeds Road.  After going over the Pannal roundabout, we took a left up the lane into Kirkby Overblow, where it was very tempting to end the ride there in one of the pubs.  Jamie suggested that as they are equally as good, then why not have a main course in each?

Temptation was overcome and we headed down from K.O., back over the A61 and through Weeton before the climb up to Almscliffe Crag.  On the way up we stopped to help a lady and daughter who’s chain had come off one of their bikes.  As the light was failing and one of us didn’t have lights we made our way back along the main road, before stopping off for some refreshments at the Black Swan in Burnbridge.

Vale of York and Boroughbridge – 1st August 2010

We started this morning’s ride by heading down to Knaresborough and along the Riverside and Abbey Road, before going towards Wetherby.  Just after Little Ribston we turned left through Cowthorpe and made our way up to Boroughbridge, going through Whixley, Thorpe Underwood, the Dunsforth’s and Aldborough.

As usual when we stop in Boroughbridge, we had our coffee stop at Gilchrists, before making our way back to Harrogate through Minskip, Staveley, Farnham and Knaresborough.  by the time we got back the sun was out and the weather was warm.

Knaresborough Villages – 27th July 2010

It was a gorgeous evening as 3 of us headed out from Harrogate heading towards Knaresborough.  We took a familiar route out through Lingerfield, Farnham and Staveley before heading up to Boroughbridge.

We then followed the old A1 down to Arkendale, before returning into Harrogate along Abbey Road, Knaresborough Riverside and up the hill into Starbeck.

A great mid-week ride with the sun setting: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/42751879

Otley – 25th July 2010

We welcomed two new riders to the Cappuccino Club this morning. Good to have you along Luke and Paul.

Four of us set off from St Aidans with the intention of heading to Pately Bridge, but as we got up behind Beckwithshaw the wind was blowing hard from the north-east, so we changed our plan and headed for Otley instead via Fewston and Timble before climbing on to Askwith Moor where the views were stunning. After a very fast descent (42mph at one point), we headed into the Manor House Tea Rooms in Otley.

After re-fuelling it was onto Pool, before taking the lane to Castley, Weeton over the A59 Leeds Road and upto Kirkby Overblow, before returning to Harrogate via Rudding Park.

A really nice ride: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/41732621

Fountains Abbey & Vale of York – 18th July 2010

It was a wet and blustery day on Sunday.  Karl and Duncan cycled up from Wetherby and joined Tamzin who cycled up from Leeds.  We headed up to Fountains Abbey via Hampthswaite, Clint, Shaw Mills etc.  We arrived at Fountain’s coffee shop 10 mins before opening but they still obliged us with coffee and cake and gave us a chance to dry out (slightly).

We then carried on out to Ripon and Burton Leonard, Staveley (Duncan confirmed that Daniel Craig does have a house there. Tamzin got excited.)  At Arkendale we chose to ride out to Thorpe Underwood and return to Wetherby via Whixley and Cattal.  It was a lot drier now and my shorts went from wet to just unpleasantly damp.  Duncan returned home at Wetherby and I carried on with Tamzin out to Collingham and left her at Harewood House for her return to Leeds.

Totals: Duncan 56miles, Karl 70 miles and a big “Chapeau” to Tamzin who will have done 70+ miles.

Wetherby – 15th July 2010

We were joined this evening by a new recruit – Tamzin.  Good to have you along Tamzin and welcome!!  Three of us headed out of Harrogate down through Burnbridge and over the Pannal roundabout before taking a left up a back lane into Kirkby Overblow where we met up with Karl and Duncan.

From K.O. we headed down a familiar route towards Sicklinghall and Wetherby.  Conditions were a bit tricky as it there was a stiff breeze blowing.  At Wetherby we then made our way onto Knaresborough.  The pace was high along this stretch of road as we had a nice tail wind and speeds got upto 25-30mph at some points.  This meant that we arrived at Ronald’s coffee & burger bar fairly quickly.

As we rolled out of the golden arches the clouds had moved in and the rain started to fall.  We took the sheltered route back to Harrogate via Abbey Road and up the hill into Starbeck.  Tamzin then continued on to cycle back to Leeds – nice one T!

A good mid-week ride…

Wharfedale – 4th July 2010

Today’s Sunday club ride saw the Cappuccino Club join up with the Shutt VR Northern Club Ride, which kicked off from Ilkley on a warm, but very windy summer’s morning.

The Shutt VR’s were heading on a long Dales extravaganza, but we decided to shorten the route due to time constraints.  We all made our way out of Ilkley, past the golf club and on to Bolton Abbey, before taking a left up the lane past Hesketh before climbing out on to the moor above Embsay, before we descended to meet the Skipton to Grassington Road.

At this point we were joined by a couple of riders who had been dropped by another ride.  We turned towards Grassington before leaving the Shutt VR ride at Rylstone and heading towards Burnsall.  We took some lovely quiet lanes to Burnsall where we had a much needed coffe stop at the Wharfe View Rea Rooms (with about another 50 cyclists).

After the coffee stop we dropped down through Wharfedale through Appletreewick, past the Cavendish Pavillion at Bolton Abbey, before re-tracing our earlier route returning back into Ilkley.

Despite the wind it was a great ride, a bit hilly and very windy.  Route details: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/39155310

South Wetherby Circular – 29th June 2010

Three of us headed out for a quick blast around the lanes and roads south of Wetherby this sunny evening.

We left Wetherby via Linton and down to Collingham before a steady climb up on the ridge towards East Rigton.  To get a bit of climing in, Karl lead us down and straight back up to nasty 20%’ers.  Onec they were out of the way though it was fairly plain sailing down to Thorner, before heading back to Wetherby via Bramham and Thorpe Arch.

Wetherby – 22nd June 2010

After last weeks ride out through the lanes to Wetherby it was decided to do the same ride again on a very warm and sunny summer’s evening.  Four of us headed out down to Burnbridge, over the Pannal roundabout and up the hill into Kirkby Overblow, before a quick descent down to Wetherby through Sicklinghall.

From Wetherby it was onto Knaresborough through Kirk Deighton and Little Ribston before stopping for a coffee at McDonald’s for the second week running.  All of us agreed that it was actually a fairly decent cuppa.

Following our patronage of Ronald’s place, we then returned to Harrogate along Abbey Road and The Riverside, before climbing up the hill into Harrogate.

A really nice ride again: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/37874093

Brimham Rocks – 20th June 2010

It was a slightly poorer turnout than normal this morning, which wasn’t suprising bearing in mind it was Father’s Day.  However, those that did turn out (Karl, James and Jamie) were greeted by clear blue skies for our ride out to Brimham Rocks.

It was a familiar route out from Harrogate, out towards Harlow Hill, before turning down to Penny Pot and on to Hampsthwaite and onto the climb up Clint Bank to Burnt Yates.  We then continued to climb up to Brimham Rocks, where we had some fantastic views back down to Harrogate.

From Brimham we headed down to Ripon via Studley Royal for a much appreciated coffee stop at the Sun Parlour Cafe in Ripon’s Spa Gardens.  After refreshments and Jamie taking the recipe for one of the cakes we headed back to Harrogate through Littlethorpe and along the old Knaresborough Road.

A really nice sunny summer’s ride.
