Knaresborough Villages – 28th October 2010

An excellent turnout this evening for a night ride with 7 of us ready for the off at 7.30.  We had a new rider this evening…Marc on his retro Raleigh Elan.  We decided to keep it steady so headed out on the same route as last Thursday towards the villages around Knaresborough.

The pace was keep at a reasonable level as the route was not that hilly and before we knew it we were heading back towards Knaresborough, so for the second time this week we dropped into the newly refurbished McDonalds Cafe for a coffee stop.  From here it was along Abbey Road and back up into Harrogate.

A good way to spend a Thursday evening!!

Wetherby – 26th October 2010

Thankfully the rain had cleared as four of us gathered for our Tuesday night roll out.  We welcomed along a new rider, Michael on his singlespeed…good to have you along Michael.  With a stiff breeze blowing we headed towards Kirkby Overblow, where we knew that once we turned towards Wetherby, that we would have the winds on our backs for the vast majority of the ride.

Progress was swift and before we knew it we were coming up the Wetherby to Knaresborough road where it was decided to take a quick McCappuccino stop in the new look McDonalds Cafe.  From there it was back into Harrogate along the Knaresborough riverside and up the hill into Starbeck.

Around Harrogate – 24th October 2010

A good turnout saw 7 of us follow Jamie out of Harrogate on a route through Coneythorpe, Burton Leonard, Bishop Monkton, Markington, and with a coffee/cake stop at Ripley where the staff all admired our jerseys (if not the bodies wearing them).

The prospect of getting some CCC shorts and winter jackets was mentioned as well as CCC long cycling weekends away with spa treatments or shopping for the ladies! Alex said he has already booked his camp site for TdF 2011 but I don’t think many of us could persuade our ladies to kip in a tent so we could ride and watch the pros.  We then headed back to Harrogate via Knox Lane and Jamie and Alex left us.

The remaining 5 then carried on down to Wetherby via Rudding Park and Follifoot.  Duncan went home and 4 of us headed out to Kirkby Overblow where Jonathan then called it a day, leaving Karl, Luke , and Martin to ride on to Weeton, Little Almscliffe Crag and then back.

A really beautiful autumn day and a great ride out.

Knaresborough Villages – 21st October 2010

We managed to sneak a bonus ride in this week and 4 of us gathered on Thursday night to stretch our legs.  Martin turned up on his fixie, so we opted for a flat route out around the Knaresborough villages.  We headed out through Starbeck and down the hill to Knaresborough before turning off to Scriven, Lingerfield and Farnham.  From there it was left to Staveley and on to Arkendale and Coneythorpe, past a very tempting Tiger Inn.

We returned to Harrogate through Goldsborough and along Abbey Road (where the scaffolding has been taken down – hooray!!) and back up the hill in to Starbeck.  Luke thought it would be a fun idea to race up the hill!

It was a nice ride and good to get out on a dry autumn night.

Wetherby – 10th October 2010

10.10.10 was the day and six of us gathered outside St Aidan’s School and all of us had our lazy legs on!  We decided to take it easy this morning and headed out of Harrogate, along Leadhall Lane and down into Burnbridge, before crossing over the Pannal roundabout and up Walton Head Lane to Kirkby Overblow.

Jamie then felt he needed to inject a bit of pain into our legs so persuaded us to drop down into Netherby before re-joining the road to Wetherby by taking a leg bending 20% climb – thanks Jamie!  We had made good progress and arrived in Wetherby well before 10am, so we then made for Knaresborough.  All was going nicely until Bryan developed a flat at the start of Abbey Road and after repairs we plonked down outside a cafe for some refreshments.

It was then back to Harrogate for a trip to the Specialized store to try and help Rob decide what new bike he would get…

A very lazy ride, but good fun nevertheless: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/52543962

Ripon and Boroughbridge – 26th September 2010

A good turnout set off from St Aidans School yesterday and we welcomed a new rider to the group – welcome Bryan good to see you!.

We headed for Ripon going through Farnham, Burton Leonard, Markington and Fountains Abbey.  Just before turning down through Studley Park, James’s cleat worked loose.  After 10 mins of tinkering we were all back on our way and heading down the main drive of Studley Park, before heading through Ripon and on to Boroughbridge through Skelton.

After a nice coffee and cake stop in Boroughbridge, we headed back to Harrogate through Aldborough, Ouseburn, Marton and Arkendale, then headed along the Knaresborough riverside before our final climb back home.

A nice ride in cooler, but fine conditions.

Almsliffe Crag – 21st September 2010

Six of us gather outside St Aidans on an unusally warm September evening.  We were also joined this evening by a new rider, Richard.  Welcome to the club Richard!!

Luke suggested the route this evening and yes, you’ve guessed it, it was a hilly one!!  We head out of Harrogate down into Burnbridge, before a short climb up towards Kirkby Overblow.  The initial pace was a bit high so we re-grouped in Kirkby and descend down and across the A61 before going through Weeton.  After crossing the A658 we started our climb through Huby and up to Almscliff Crag.  We then dropped down in to North Rigton, where we then climbed up to the top of Brackenthwaite Lane.

Normally Brackenthwaite Lane is a nice fast descent, but not so in the dark.  We descend back down into Burnbridge with caution, before then heading back into Harrogate along Leadhall Lane.

A really nice ride, that made the most of the warm night.  View the route: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/49984215

Vale of York and Wetherby – 19th September 2010

Just Craig and Karl ventured out on a rather wet Sunday morning.

We set off out to Boroughbridge via the usual Farnham, Staveley route and found ourselves in Boroughbridge earlier than expected.  We decided to press on to The Dunsforths, Gt Ouseburn, Thorpe Underwood, Cattal and then realised the next …possibility for a coffee stop was Wetherby. so after getting very wet and battling into the prevailing westerly wind we eventually got ourselves warmed up in the cafe in The Shambles at Wetherby for a much needed Cappuccino and teacake.

Getting going again afterwards was tough but the road up through Sickinghall to Kirkby Overblow warmed the legs up again.  We then rode past Pannal golf club and parted company at the turning for Rudding Park where Craig headed home to Harrogate and I rode back to Wetherby.

Mileage approx 42 from Harrogate. 60 from Wetherby.  Despite the weather it was an enjoyable ride.

Marton-cum-Grafton – 14th September 2010

Five of us gathered (including Craig for the first time – welcome Craig!) outside St Aidans on very windy night.  The consensus was to take advantage of a tail wind to start off with, with the hope of the wind dying down over the evening.  With that in mind we headed out through Knaresborough, Farnham, Staveley and Minskip and before we knew it we were going over the A1 at Boroughbridge.  To keep out of the wind we headed down a sheltered back lane to Marton-cum-Grafton.

Unfortunately the wind was not letting up and inevitable turn back into the wind came soon after M-c-C as we head back towards Harrogate through Arkendale, Ferensby and back into Knaresborough.  The going was tough and a low gear was needed, but at least it was not wet!!  A nice 25 mile ride that certainly cleared any cobwebs away!
