West Harrogate Night Ride – 26th November 2009

John and James went for a quick blast out to the West of Harrogate this evening with the lights on and after the rush hour.

We left Harrogate along Whinney Lane before heading through Beckwithshaw and out and up towards Little Almscliffe Crag where we were rewarded with great views of the night lights thanks to a nice clear evening.  From there it was down to Norwood, past the Sun Inn and a return to Harrogate via Penny Pot Lane.

A great way to spend an evening and beats spending an hour in the garage on the turbo-trainer!!

Vale of York – 22nd November 2009

John and James were joined this morning by Rob, Sarah and Lyn to make the most of some unexpected early morning sunshine.  The forecast was for heavy showers and high winds….

We followed the same route as last Sunday’s ride as a few were nursing hangovers and an easy flat ride was what the doctor had ordered.  The ride was going nicely until we turned south at Aldborough, by which time the wind had picked up a bit and yes, we were headed into it for the next 15 miles all the way to Wetherby!

We did manage to keep a reasonable pace though until we got blasted by a shower coming into Wetherby, so we heaed for the shelter of The Shambles Cafe before heading back to Harrogate via Kirk Deighton, Spofforth and Follifoot, where James peeled off for roast at his parents.  Once again a very nice ride albeit a slightly windy one!

Vale of York – 15th November 2009

Only John and James ventured out on this initially chilly Sunday morning.  However, the sun soon started to appear and the morning turned into a beautiful autumnal day perfect for riding.

We headed out from Harrogate towards Knaresborough, and out onto the Boroughbridge road before turning off through Scriven and Lingerfield.  It was then onto a familiar route to Farnham and Staveley and up towards Boroughbridge.  Just after going over the A1 we turned off to Arkendale and headed down through the Dunsfords, Ouseburn, Whixley and Cattal at a fairly steady pace before eventually stopping in Wetherby at the Shambles Tea Rooms for a well earned coffee.

After leaving Wetherby we headed for Kirk Deighton, before turning off to Spofforth and returning to Harrogate via Follifoot and Rudding Park.  The ride was a nice and easy flat ride which ended up being 43 miles in total.

Skipton & Pendle District – 8th November 2009

Rob, Sarah and James headed over to Skipton to join up with some other cycling friends – Adrian, Mick, Chris and Robbie to head out round the southern Dales and into Lancashire.

The ride started from Skipton High Street and head initially towards Grassington before turning left at Rylstone (home of the original Calendar Girls) and going through Hetton to Airton via a lovely but undulating back lane which was very quiet.  From Airton it was then out to Hellifield where we picked up the A682 before turning off at Newsholme, just after which Sarah got a puncture, in the direction of Barnoldswick.

A fairly stiff climb followed out of Barnoldswick, but this was rewarded with a nice descent into Foulridge for a coffee stop at Cafe Cargo by the canal.  Time was pressing on, so Rob, Sarah and James mad a dash back to Skipton via the busy A59 and Carleton.

A nice 40 mile ride which ended in some nice Autumn sunshine!!

Masham and Nidderdale – 17th October 2009

Great ride yesterday with Rob and James being joined by Lyn who came up from Sheffield and Paul who came over from Calverley – great to have you along guys!

Kicked the ride off by heading out from Harrogate to Penny Pot before dropping down into Hampsthwaite and onto Shaw Mills, Markington and past Fountains Abbey. From there it was over the main Ripon road through the villages towards Masham. The Suncatchers Cafe caught our attention in Masham where we stopped for some brunch to get our legs back before the long climb upto Lofthouse summit. This was brutal in places with the gradient hitting 22% on a couple of occassions. Lyn was struggling with his gears as they would not engage properly and the language was brilliant!!

A speedy descent down the other side in Lofthouse then saw us take the nice flat route down through Upper Nidderdale past Gouthwaite Resevoir to Pateley Bridge, for another quick tea stop. From Pateley we took the Harrogate Road to Summerbridge before cutting up to Darley and returning to Harrogate through Hampsthwaite and Penny Pot again.

The ride was a fantastic way to spend a nice, crisp autumnal day and enjoy some breathtaking scenery, even though some pain had to be endured in places.

The 2010 TDF looks like it is going to be fun and look at the Pyrenees…twice up the Tourmalet – that is going to hurt.

Vale of York Villages – 4th October 2009

Only two of us this morning – John and James and after the previous Sunday’s exploits it was time for a slightly easier ride so we headed out into the Vale of York.

Leaving Harrogate towards Knaresborough, Farnham, Staveley and Boroughbridge – it was then down towards and through the Dunsfords and Thorpe Underwood on what was a beautiful sunny October morning. In the sun it was pleasant, but there was a definite chill in the air when in the shade.

After going over the A59 and through Cattal and Cowthorpe, it was time for a coffee stop at the Shambles Cafe in Wetherby, before returning to Harrogate via Sicklinghall and Kirkby Overblow.

A very nice and enjoyable 42 mile ride.

Bolton Abbey – 27th September 2009

Rob, Sarah, John and James headed out from Harrogate on what we thought would be a nice ride to Ilkley and back, however Rob had other plans, probably influenced by James saying he wanted to crack 50miles at some point during the week before.

Anyway, we headed out through Kirkby Overblow and Weeton before heading to Pool and Otley. In Otley we went over the river and turned towards Askwith and Ilkley. After having to make way for a beard of cows we gathered pace on a steady run, past Ilkley Golf Club. It was here that Rob said that Bolton Abbey was in reach so let’s head there and see how we feel!

We reached Bolton Abbey feeling good, so during a coffee/tea stop at The Abbey Tea Rooms we collectively decided to head back to Harrogate by heading up towards Appletreewick and past Stump Cross Caverns to the top of Greenhow Hill. Sarah took some pursuading, but that was where we headed. After a long steady climb, which was pretty steep in sections we reached the top of Greenhow to be rewarded with ome stunning views. From here it was a swift return to Harrogate past Menwith and down Penny Pot Lane, before one final climb up to Harlow Hill.

A really good ride totalling nearly 57 miles and 2,700 ft of climbing resulting in some sore legs and bums!!

Beningborough Hall – 19th September 2009

Four of us headed out from Harrogate on the first really autumnal morning of the season. It was chilly and misty. We started the ride by heading down in Knaresborough before heading out to Farnham and Staveley continuing on to Aldborough.

From Aldborough it was down the lanes through the Dunsforth’s before going over the bridge at Adlwark and onto Beningborough. The ride out was a brisk 11/2 hours and we made it to the farm shop 10 minutes before it opened. The kindly obliged and opened a bit early to serve us tea and coffee.

The ride back was more more direct route, back over the bridge at Aldward before heading towards Marton and Arkendale and returning to Harrogate via Knaresborough and Starbeck in some nice September sunshine.

A very pleasant ride totalling 43 miles: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/13601483
