Pateley Bridge – 18th April 2010

It was time for some hills yesterday and that seemed to attract a few more of us with 8 heading out from Harrogate.  Our route out to Pateley took as up past Beckwithshaw and Little Almscliffe, before John split a tyre and return home with Ben who had to go to work.  We then headed out past Menwith before the long steady climb to the top of Greenhow Hill before plummeting down into Pateley before a well earned break at the Lemon Meringue Tea Rooms.

A few of noticed a burning smell on the way down Greenhow, and soon realised it was our brake blocks taking a hammering.  After a leisurely coffee and cake stop (apart from Lyn who tucked into a Bacon and Egg sarnie) we headed towards Summerbridge and a quick detour via the new Stif Bikes shop.  Very impressed and it had a coffee bar for future reference.

We then returned to Harrogate via Dacre, Darley, Birstwith (and the delighted Meg Gate Hill) and Hampsthwaite.  It was a very enjoyable ride and good to get some good hills in the legs.

Vale of York – 4th April 2010

Easter Sunday saw a smaller turnout than normal, with just Jamie, Karl and James getting the green light.  It was decided to keep the ride fairly steady so we head out on a familiar route towards Aldborough, before heading down through the Dunsford’s, Thorpe Underwood, Whixley and Cattal and on to Wetherby for a well earned rest in The Shambles Tea Room.  We were ushered upstairs as I think that three men in lycra might have upset some of the regular punters, nevertheless the coffee and cakes were good.

It was then back to Harrogate via Kirk Deighton, Spofforth, Follifoot and Rudding Park to complete a nice 41 miles in ever improving conditions.

Lower Nidderdale – 14th March 2010

Only a quick ride this morning as it was Mother’s Day and there was only two of us for that very reason.  James was joined by Ben, who was riding with us for the first time.

Once again, the weather was good and we headed out of Harrogate along Penny Pot before cutting down to Darley and back alongside the River Nidd to Birstwith before tackling that evil little 14%’er.  It was then back to Harrogate via Hampsthwaite, Killinghall and Know Mill.

I nice quick ride and no damage done on the marital front!

Fountains Abbey and Boroughbridge – 14th February 2010

Despite it being Valentine’s day we had a good turnout this morning with new boys Malcolm, Jamie and Dan joining Karl and James.  We started with a bumpy route out to Fountains Abbey through Hampsthwaite, Shaw Mills and Markington before heading down through the Deer Park at Fountains.  We were rewarded with great views down the Avenue towards Ripon Cathederal and beyond.

From Ripon we headed to Boroughbridge and a stop at Gilchrists Tea Rooms, very good as usual except Malcolm’s eggs were most definitely not poached!  From here it was a return to Harrogate via Minskip, Staveley, Arkendale and Abbey Road in Knaresborough.

Once again we were blessed with some nice winter sunshine for what was a very enjoyable 41 miles.

Vale of York and Wetherby – 7th February 2010

Sorry – bit late in getting this posted…..only three of us ventured out last Sunday – Rob, James and Karl (who had cycled to Harrogate from Wetherby).  We headed out on a nice gentle route towards Arkendale and on past Marton-cum-Grafton towards Great Ouseburn.  The weather wasn’t great – a bit damp and grey, but it was nice to be out stretching the legs.

From Ouseburn we headed down past the Underwoods, Whixley and Cattal before turning towards Wetherby.  At this point we cycled for a while with a member of the Yorkshire Road Club who had lost his way on their annual reliability ride, nice talking to you whoever you were and hope you caught up!.

After some breakfast in the Shambles cafe we head back to Harrogate through Sicklinghall and Kirkby Overblow.  We thought we were going to leave Karl in Wetherby, but as he had a pass out until early afternoon he joined us back to Harrogate before cycling back to Wetherby!!  Nice one mate – I like your style!

A nice ride – despite the cold, murky conditions….

Ripon and Boroughbridge – 31st January 2010

The first ride of 2010 and what a great one it was.  We were joined by a new recruit, Karl, this morning.  welcome aboard Karl – it was good to have you along and hopefully we didn’t scare you off.

We headed out of Harrogate towards Knaresborough and Farnham before taking the Old Knaresborough road, through Bishop Monkton to Ripon.  After a quick dash down the Ripon by-pass we headed towards Boroughbridge before turning off towards the village of Skelton-on-Ure.

On arriving in Boroughbridge we stumbled across Gilchrists Bakers and Tearoom.  It was like stepping back in time, but buy did they know how to make a cuppa and cake…will be going back there for sure!

After our coffee stop we headed out towards Marton-cum-Grafton along a lane that had more ice on it than tarmac – we had to get oof our bikes for 20m to walk over a very bad stretch.  From Marton it was a familiar route back to Harrogate via Arkendale, Coneythorpe, Goldsborough and Abbey Road, before the final climb back up into Harrogate.

A very nice way for CCC to finally kick off 2010!

Fountains Abbey and Ripon – 13th December 2009

Another lovely sunny winter morning greeted John and James this morning.  We started off by heading out on a familiar route from Harrogate upto the army college, before dropping into Hampsthwaite, then over into Shaw Mills heading for Markington.  In Markington it was a left turn towards Fountains Abbey.  After a hilly start it was nice to get past Fountains to head downhill into Ripon.

From Ripon we took the old Knaresborough road through Bishop Monkton and Burton Leonard, before returning through Knaresborough up the main road into Starbeck and Harrogate.  The pace was keen for a winters day, but the ride was very enjoyable and earned some brownie points for getting back early!
