Wetherby – 16th June 2010

Cappuccino at McDonalds….

Three of us kicked off a mid-week ride to Wetherby from St Aidans School.  We headed out on a nice sunny evening to Burnbridge and up to Kirkby Overblow before descending down into Sicklinghall and Wetherby.  We decided we needed a quick coffee stop, but nowhere was open in Wetherby so guess what?  we made a beeline for McDonalds at Knaresborough!

So for the first time in Cappuccino Club history we had a Cappuccino at the Golden Arches – and it wasn’t a bad one either!

From Knaresborough it was a familiar return to Harrogate along Abbey Road and the Riverside and up the hill into Starbeck.  23 miles in total and a good stetch of the legs!

Tadcaster – 6th June 2010

Most of the CCC saw the weather forecast and decided to stay in bed, so only three of us, headed out from Harrogate towards the Vale of York and Tadcaster.

The early part of the ride saw us drop down into Knaresborough and along the Riverside and Abbey Road, before heading out towards Tockwith and Long Marston past the Battle of Marston Moor Memorial.  Thankfully the rain was holding off at this point and we managed to keep the pace fairly brisk along the flat country lanes.

It was then onto Askham Richard and Wighill before dropping down into Tadcaster and heading for Tykes Cafe for a well earned cuppa and a break from the now descending rain.  From Tadcaster we returned to Harrogate via Thorpe Arch, Wetherby, Spofforth and Follifoot.

Fountains Abbey – 30th May 2010

The intention for this ride was to do a nice 50 miler out to Masham and back, but once underway we were balsted by a not very nice headwind!  It was decided to pull into the visitor centre at Fountains Abbey as a couple of us had ailments and get charged up with coffee and cake and take a more leisurely route back to Harrogate.

After the very nice (if a tad expensive) refreshment stop it was down the main Studley Royal drive and onto Ripon, before returning along a nice flat route on the old Knaresborough Road, before climbing back into Harrogate via Starbeck.

A nice ride: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/35068201

Lower Nidderdale – 25th May 2010

So…who turned off the great big sunshine central heating system?  It was back to good old British weather this evening for our ride out to the west of Harrogate and into Nidderdale.

We kicked of by heading out towards Beckwithshaw and up the long drag to Little Almscliffe, before continuing past the Sun Inn and on to Penny Pot Lane.  We took a left turn and then head over the A59 before dropping down into Nidderdale past the Queens Head at Kettlesing before heading into Hampsthwaite and our return to Harrogate via Knox Mill.

Not the longest of rides, but enough to get the legs thinking after our Beningborough excursion at the weekend.

Beningborough Hall – 23rd May 2010

Due to the hot forecast it was decided that a longer and flatter route was called for this morning – especially as Malcolm anf John decided to bring their TT bikes!!  Five of us set off for Beningborough Hall heading out through Starbeck, Knaresborough and Farnham before turning off into Staveley and Minskip.  The pace was a good one, probably due to the sun on our backs and we continued through Aldborough and eventually into Ouseburn and over Alward Bridge before arriving at Beningborough Farm shop for a well earned coffee and cake.

The return was into an increasing headwind, through Thorpe Underwood, Whixley, Cattal and North Rigton, before a last minute drink stop in Spofforth to get some much needed sugar for the last little bit up through Follifoot and past Rudding Park.

It was a great ride and some fantastic conditions: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/34285661

Almscliffe Crag – 18th May 2010

At last some warm evening sunshine!!  Four of us headed out from Harrogate towards Pannal and up beside Pannal Golf Course before crossing the by-pass and heading down into Kirkby Overblow.  It was very tempting to cut the ride early and have a pint in the Shoulder of Mutton, but we resisted the temptation and headed down towards, and over the A61 and on through Weeton.

We then headed over the A658 and into Huby before climbing up into the setting sun and on to Almscliffe Crag (which was over-run by climbers).  We were rewarded with some great late evening views, but the pace continued as we headed into North Rigton and up towards the top of Brackenthwaite Lane where Karl and Jamie decided to have a race to the top.  Thanks lads but there was no way that Rob and I were going to keep up!

Temptation finally gave way at the Swan in Burnbridge where we stopped for a sneaky drink before completing a very nice ride of just over 20 miles.

Fountains Abbey and Boroughbridge – 16th May 2010

The forecast was for rain, but thankfully it stayed away as Karl, Jamie and James headed out of Harrogate along a familiar route towards Penny Pot, Hampsthwaite and Shaw Mills before turning off to Fountains Abbey in Markington.  Once at Fountains Abbey we took the main drive down through the Deer Park before heading into Ripon and to Boroughbridge where there was a much needed coffee stop at Gilchrist’s Tea Rooms.

From Boroughbridge it was head’s down and handlebars into the wind for our return to Harrogate via Arkendale, Coneythorpe and Abbey Road.  A really nice ride of two halves – bumpy start and flatter end.

North Harrogate Circular – 12th May 2010

Karl, Duncan and James headed out for a mid-week ride on a sunny but cold evening.  We left Harrogate heading up the Otley Road, before turning towards Penny Pot Lane and on down towards Hampsthwaite where we climbed up through Clint and to Burnt Yates.  From there we headed through Shaw Mills.  Time was pressing on so we took a route back to Harrogate via Ripley, Nidd, Scotton, Lingerfield and Knaresborough.

Otley – 3rd May 2010

We moved our normal Sunday ride to the bank holiday Monday and 5 of us headed out of Harrogate up past Little Almscliffe Crag and onwards over the damn at Fewston before we started out long climb up through Timble and onto Askwith Moor.

The forecast was for cold winds and showers and that certainly lived up to expectations, especially after our coffee stop in Otley at the Manor House Tea Room.  From Otley we were intending to head to Wetherby via Pool, Castley and Weeton, but that was where the rain started.  In Kirkby Overblow it was decided to head back to Harrogate via Rudding Park for an earlier than normal finish.

Dispite the weather it was still a nice ride and certainly much hillier than last weeks excursion to Beningborough.

Beningborough Hall – 25th April 2010

We were all scheduled to leave Harrogate at 8.30, but unfortunately Karl suffered a puncture on his way in so, he and new recruit Duncan decided to meet us on route.  The rest of us left Harrogate and headed out towards Staveley, Minskip and Aldborough before eventually meeting Karl and Duncan at Upper Dunsford.  All the while the weather was gradually turning from a damp grey start, to sunny spells.

As usual the coffee and cakes at the Farm Shop at Beningborough Hall were excellent and its a good job none of us had panniers or rucksacks as they would have been filled with lots of other tasty looking treats to take home.

From Beningborough it was back over Aldwark Bridge, before heading down towards Whixley and Cattal before returning back to Harrogate via Spofforth and Follifoot.  It was good to get a few more miles in the legs and the ride finished in some nice warm sunshine.
