Comments:  We only discovered this tea room recently and decided we had been missing out.  Great big toasted tea-cakes and plenty of room for the bikes out the back.

Comments:  This is our new favourite cafe in Harrogate.  As the name suggests it has Italian owners, which means the coffee is fantastic.  The food, cakes and strudels are also wonderful.  Thanks guys…we will be back.

North Harrogate MTB Ride – 28th November 2010

The snows came down around Harrogate this weekend and as such it was too dangerous to get the road bikes out.  Feeling the need to get the legs turning a few of us decided to dust off the mountain bikes from the back of the garage and hit the bridleways around Harrogate.

Five of us set off on a route planned by Jamie and within a mile of starting James had hit the deck on some ice!  Dispite that we carried on along the Beryl Burton Way through Bilton and down into Knaresborough.  From there we headed to Farnham where we went off-road for several miles through South Stainley and Cayton, before hitting the tarmac again at Ripley.

We then returned to Harrogate through Killinghall and Know Mill Lane before collapsing into Cafe Rosso for coffee and cakes to help us defrost.

A good fun ride in beautiful wintry conditions.

Masham – 21st November 2010

For our ride this week, we teamed up with Shutt VR for a slightly longer ride than normal out to Masham.  Thirteen intrepid souls gathered in very cold and wet conditions for the trip and we set off in the direction of Knaresborough, before turning off towards Farnham, Burton Leonard and Markington.  Just before Markington Malcolm left us to head back into Harrogate, and the rest continued out towards Fountains Abbey, where Jamie left us to get back for some Sunday lunch!!.

We went up past Fountains and over the B6265 before commencing the first real climb of the day into Winksley.  By now the weather was improving, but we were headed into a very cold northerly head wind, so thoughts were turning to coffee and cakes in Masham.  After going through Kirkby Malzeard and into Grewelthorpe we headed up the drag out of Grewelthorpe, before a nice long fast descent and run in to Masham and the Suncatchers Cafe.

After the usual high standard of coffee, cakes and bacon sarnies, it was back in the saddles for the return trip via Nosterfield, Thornborough, Wath, Ripon, Littlethorpe and Bishop Monkton.  This terrain was nice and flat and the tiring legs were helped by a tailwind.  After Bishop Monkton we re-traced our steps back through Farnham and Knaresborough, before finishing the ride back at St Aidans.

A really nice 52 mile ride, with good company and thanks Simon @ Shutt for joining us and well done to Emma for making the trip from Hebden Bridge!!

Lower Nidderdale – 14th November 2010

The first frosty start of the autumn and a record turnout!!  Ten of us gathered this morning outside St Aidans with Brimham Rocks in our sights.  Duncan was on a tight leash and only cycled in to say hello before returning to Wetherby, so after 5 minutes we were back down to 9.

We headed out of Harrogate along the Skipton Road before turning down towards Know Mill Lane.  All of the sudden there were a few scrapes and shouts as four of us hit the deck due to some ice – ouch!  We decided that we should stick to busier roads that had been exposed to the sun, so we abandoned our Brimham Rocks plans and headed through Harrogate and up over the back of Beckwithshaw and into Lower Nidderdale.

After going through Darley, up Clint Bank and through Hampsthwaite we decided to return to Harrogate to warm ourselves in a cafe.  New rider Tim said he knew of a new cafe in town so we dived into Cafe Rosso, on Mayfield Grove to a very warm welcome, some great coffee and even better cakes.

After the coffee stop the group segmented with a few riders going to get another 40minutes in their legs, whilst a few returned back home for an early bath.

A nice roll out despite the scary start.

Wetherby and Boroughbridge – 7th November 2010

Surprisingly only 4 of us were on the start line on fantastic, crisp November morning.  A couple were coughing and spluttering, so we decided to keep it easy on the legs and lungs and head out of Harrogate towards Kirkby Overblow and down through Sicklinghall and into Wetherby.

Rob was test driving a new bike (Trek Madone 5.2), so on the road up to Walshford, both James and Karl decided to give it a go aswell.  Nice wheels!.  From there it was into Cattal, through Whixley and up to Boroughbridge via Ouseburn and the Dunsforths.

We decided to head into Gilchrists Tea Rooms, which was a mistake as the usual grumpy service was accompanied by the smell of burnt tea cakes. Anyway, we carried on refuelling on tea and coffee and then rolled back to Harrogate through Staveley and Farnham.

A lovely ride in beautiful conditions….

Pateley Bridge – 31st October 2010

The mist had descend on us yesterday, with a cold, grey and damp start to the day as the peleton gathered for the off.  After a couple of flat rides over recent weeks, we headed out of Harrogate with Greenhow Hill and Pateley Bridge our target.  We also welcomed a new rider, Mike along for the first time.

The initial pace was steady as we went up to  Little Almscliff Crag and on past the Sun Inn before crossing the A59.  We then started the slow and steady climb up Duck Street where the group started to fragment a bit.  We came back together at the top of Greenhow Hill before a cautious descent down into Pateley for our coffee stop.  Thankfully new owners had taken over the Lemon Merinque Tea Room, so we dived in out of the cold for a well earned break.

The return back to Harrogate still involved plenty of climbing though.  We stopped quickly at Stif Bikes in Summerbridge, before then turning off to Dacre, Darley, Birstwith and Hampsthwaite.  Alex then said he knew a quiet route back into Harrogate, which we all agreed to….little did we know it involved some steep sections of the Duchy!!  Thanks Alex!!  Anyway, we all got back into Harrogate in one piece.

A really nice ride, but a shame we couldn’t see much.
